In the safe hands of an Avadhoota

Whatever I write below, has been personally read and approved by Avadhoota Nadananda.

Flight was late. I reached Delhi from London on 25th of July. Heavy traffic. It took literally ages to reach Gurgaon. I had to attend a short program before leaving for the airport again. I quickly brushed and washed up. Since there was no time for any food, I “gobbled” a special South Indian coffee made by Phaneendar’s mother and went for the program. I quickly completed the program and rushed to the airport to catch the flight to Bangalore. This was an unannounced trip. I and a companion. Only two of us. We are going to see Avadhoota Nadananda. He had beckoned me to come and meet him as soon as I come back to India. He was resting after his most important trip to Mookambika, Kollur; the place that made and moulded Avadhoota Nadananda.

Mohanji and Nadananda unconditional love

It started raining. Bangalore choked. Traffic blocked. It took us literally 5 hours to reach his abode. The previous morning, his leg slipped while getting out of his car resulting in a slipped disc. Hence, we kept coaxing him over the phone to have his meal and take rest. But he wouldn’t listen. He wanted to wait. The love of a Guru, mother, father, friend, companion, protector – all in one. The divine fragrance of true love! The master was waiting! The master always waits patiently!

A kind of guilt for making him wait dawned in me. As soon as it came, it disappeared. “What have I got to do with it? Neither me nor Guruji are responsible for the rain and traffic blocks. We are just witnesses of the divine play. Just witnesses!”

Mohanji (243)

Finally, we arrived at the doorstep of the abode of  Avadhoota Nadananda. There was not even a drop of time to waste. I was more concerned of Guruji refraining from food because of the delay the rain caused us. I went upstairs, guided by Sri. Mohan Gaaru. As soon as Avadhoota Nadananda saw me, deep and genuine happiness dawned on his face. I prostrated at his feet. I held his feet in eternal reverence. His feet are the feet of the Divine Mother and the eternal Guru Mandala. He said “Get up, Mohanji”. I got up and he got up too, even though his face was grimacing in excruciating pain due to the slipped disc. He repeated with overwhelming happiness, “Mohanji has come back to me.” He held my hands, hugged me, and kept repeating, “You have come back to me! Welcome back. I am going to give you everything that I have. If I did not do that, all that I have would have gone wasted. You are the most eligible one to receive from me.”

Every word he spoke hit me deep in my heart. I felt that he was already changing my software to receive the absolute in its complete grandeur. This was also in reply to an earlier mail from me to him, seeking his opinion on my intention to withdraw from public life for a while and court silence and practice. He had not replied. And these words that he spoke made me understand that the question that I asked was totally invalid and the Guru Mandala has already decided my future. All I have to do is to just flow. I have nothing to claim as my own including the things that we see and experience such as the body, mind and intellect. I am an empty bottle. He said “All the masters who you met have gone one by one. Soon I will go too. But I will not go before I give you everything. I will keep all my promises and fulfill the expectations of the Guru Mandala.”

I asked him “Guruji, why am I meeting these masters including you, at their last stage of walk on earth?” He replied “Nobody has left you. Nor will I leave you. They are meeting you, to take their work forward, which you are performing selflessly. You are guiding people the way we all want. All those whom you met, left with peace and satisfaction that the work that they had started will continue through you and you will never have a personal agenda. Purity and innocence are the strengths. The world may not understand this. We do. The Guru Mandala does. And we are with you, behind you and will never abandon you or let you suffer.” He added, “You are meeting them during their last stages because you are here to merge and continue traditions. And the masters never owned anything anyway.” This gave me clarity.

The faces of Vittal Babaji, Baba Ganeshananda Giri, and Vasudevan Swami, flashed through my mind. Now, here was Avadhoota Nadananda explaining the tapestry of my existence. Everything makes sense in a way, but when I imagine the weight of the responsibility, I wondered, can this perishable flesh see it through? If yes, how long? Guruji added “The sign of a true disciple is the lack of WHY in their mind. Never ask WHY or HOW. You shall be given everything and more you need for carrying out the journey to a wonderful completion. I shall keep my promises. I shall be with you every step, even if I do not have a body. The Guru mandala will be with you. Divine Mother will be with you. Our supreme guru Lord Dattatreya will be with you.” Thundering assurances! I never asked WHY ever. I only accepted with a bowed head the will of the supreme always.

Suddenly he asked me how my journey was and if I was tired after my overnight travel from London, this trip, without any rest, the tedium of road trip, so on and so forth. I was overwhelmed by the sight and touch of Guruji, I had no pain, fatigue or jet lag. There was no time for jet lag. I have come home. He walked with us to the door, sat us down and he himself started feeding us. His love was overflowing. It was palpable and every bit was a shower of blessing. A torrential rain of blessings was flowing down on me and my companion right from the palpable portals of the Guru Mandala through the hands of Avadhoota Nadananda.

After the food, we briefly talked about the proposed ceremony to be held on October 10th. He asked me to invite people close to me because this would be one of the most auspicious functions for me and also the last function that he intended to perform in this lifetime. He talked with firmness, determination and extreme conviction. He said “This title is not my decision. This title is not your expectation either. This has been ordered by the order of Guru Mandala. I am delivering it to you on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dashami. This is not an ordinary day, ordinary title or ordinary function. You will never be the same again. I will step down. You will climb up.” I felt a bit sad “Guruji, I understand, appreciate and honor the decision of Guru Mandala. I am not even asking if I am eligible because I have learned to accept what comes my way with utmost humility and surrender. But, why should you step down? And where am I climbing to?”

Guruji explained, again in a very serious and no-nonsense tone – soaked with love. “I have been crying to find someone eligible to hand over. I have been waiting for the permission to withdraw from public life. Guru Mandala told me “You can get off the saddle”. I asked again, “What next?” They just said “You are free to step down now.” They relieved me from all my responsibilities. I have to step down. Since a few decades, I have been walking this tedious path literally with blood in my mouth and 5th stage cancer which I had taken over from a woman who was dying. Now I am 76. This body is tired. I cannot move on like this anymore. I need to withdraw from public life, go back to myself and merge with the supreme consciousness. I shall be in isolation.

It was late at night. We decided to sleep. I literally had a long day. After a weekend retreat in London, I had hopped into the first possible flight to Delhi via Dubai and, after a function at Gurgaon, had come off to Bangalore. I had no sleep whatsoever. But, I was not tired either. Anyways, we decided to call it a day.

Nadanandaji feeding Mohanji like the Divine Mother.jpg

Dawn of 26th July. After I brushed washed and prayed, I walked to Guruji’s room. Guruji had decided to make a special dish for me. Sister Sujata told me that Guruji has been preparing for my arrival since days and was showing so much excitement, as would a mother or father would show when their son comes home after a long absence. Guruji himself went out and bought vegetables to cook dishes for me and insisted on serving me. Affection without barriers! Totally sincere and unconditional, overflowing love of a true master.

He said “I am not your guru.” I was perplexed. I did not understand what he meant. “I sign off your mails as “brotherly”. Why? I do not want to have any barrier between us, not even that of a guru and disciple. I am like your elder brother. I come to you. You need not come to me. You need not take any effort anymore. You have already come to me, come back to me. Now it is my turn. I come towards you running, just like my guru came running to me and took over my life and destiny. Just be available. Just be there.” So many things are happening already inside. I decided to just surrender and keep quiet. He asked “You have some barrier with me, haven’t you?” I said “No Guruji. I have respect. Only respect for you.” He said “Love. Love is enough. I feel you are my younger brother, even though you call me as Guruji. Let us not have any barrier”.

“Do you know who came and accepted the dakshina that I had handed over to you at Shirdi?” I said “I understand Guruji, he comes from Guru Mandala. He is my gateway to the ultimate reality.” Guruji said “He is the one who took me there. He is the one who guided me. He is eternal.” (I am not permitted to reveal the name here even though Guruji said the name in front of all those who were listening. If Guruji permits, I shall mention the name at a future date.”)

He asked “Are you not going to write a blog?” I said “No Guruji. Let me keep this sacred meeting and discussions  away from the eyes of skeptical minds. There have been some complaints about the last blog that, what I wrote is not true.” Guruji said “I approved your blog. In that case, we are collaborating with each other to mislead the people? HA HA HA.” He laughed aloud and continued. “Whenever truth is conveyed, the insecure and guilty people will say that we are scaring them. This is good. Truth must be told. You need not worry. The Guru Mandala is talking through you. Every word, every matter we convey. You have my approval. Go on, write it.” Even though it was on his instruction that I started writing, I developed some doubts again. “How much can I disclose?” He said “As much as the world needs to know. There is nothing to hide. Those who manipulate the minds of people will call the absolute truth as untruth and will sell their own version of partial truth. Let us not care about it.”

I never went after powers or titles. I never tried to display anything out of natural. What comes to us is meant for us. Never ask why and why not. Both are absurd.

Mohanji and Avadhoota Nadananda 5

He said “The function of 10th is very important. It will be life-changing for you and for me. Your family members should join us.” He personally invited my family members on phone one by one. He was coughing and was visibly looking weak and tired. But he was as enthusiastic as a teenager. He said “I do not touch money. I do not use money. When people give money, I use it for serving the needy. I do not have a bank account. But, you are different. You have a family and you have their responsibility. You must live like a regular householder. You have to lead a different lifestyle than me. Do not imitate a master. Accept his teachings wholeheartedly.”

He told a story “One master was walking with 4 disciples. They became thirsty. There was no water. Suddenly they saw an alcohol shop. The master went in and drank four bottles of palm liquor and walked out. Seeing this, the disciples also did the same. Nothing happened to the master. The disciples became drunk. They walked further. They felt hungry. A few yards ahead, they saw a metal melting unit. The red-hot melted metal was oozing out of the opening. The master took it in his hands and swallowed it. Nothing happened to him. The disciples were unable to do that. The moral is, the master could possibly perform the unbelievable. Looking at that, the disciple should not attempt such feats. They should become masters before they attempt such things. Sister Sujata also mentioned that even though Guruji is going for treatment, in X ray and Scans, no ailments are visible while he is suffering from 5th stage cancer. This is intriguing the doctors. Guruji said, “when our 7 chakras are activated and we operate in superconscious realms, body is equal to sookshma (subtle). When cosmic energy is fully activated in our system, any kind of artificial energies such as medicines or machines will never work or get nullified. Medical science will not understand that.”

Guruji explained the things to do about the service that Manav Seva Samiti and Ammucare are doing together at various locations. He reiterated on two major things – BEING PRACTICAL and BEING RELEVANT.( Activities relevant to each location, people and their needs) He mentioned that charity should not be for name-sake. We should never have superiority complex. We should deliver what is relevant. We should not delay. We should perform before time because our promises affect somebody positively or negatively. When promises are not kept, it affects relationships. And we should focus more on empowering than feeding so much to create dependency. We should hold their hands as long as needed and allow them to be free. Humility is the right attitude of a karma yogi. He urged all to perform more activities and never allow the system to slow down because of individual ennui. He asked me to keep an eye when he goes on silence and help as much as I can. He was happy with the current team leaders and members. He said activity should always be relevant to the location and situation. There is no point in providing soap where there is no water. Give water first – then soap.

He sounded mentally prepared to withdraw and also told that his original plan of the title ceremony in December had to be brought to October because of his deteriorating health conditions. And he reiterated that it is a big occasion. He said “I do not speak anything. It is Guru Mandala speaking through me. Those who connect to this body called Nadananda will suffer with delusion. Those who connect to the universe beneath the form will reach the highest. Those who need nothing will get everything. Those who need everything can never be satisfied by anybody”. “Everything is in an atom. The potential for the whole universe is stored in an atom. And atom is all that we are.”

The day vanished as a carnival. Old friend Lakshmi and Natesh Mahadevan spiced up the day with their presence. It is difficult to write here everything that Guruji said to me. He also mentioned about a few rituals during the ceremony as well as transfer of spiritual energy. Anyways, he would remember more than me because he knows better.

A long light day, evaporated into bliss supreme.

Sai and “I” – Shirdi Sai Baba

Sai and “I”
There is nothing apart from Sai. I cannot be separate from Sai. You cannot be separate from Sai either. Sai is pure consciousness. Sai cannot be contained in a form, any form.
I must write this from the angle of an ordinary humble devotee of Bhagawan Shree Shirdi Sai Baba. Baba is an avatar. We mere mortals cannot ever understand the consciousness of such a powerful entity. He is beyond time and space. He gives experience to every true devotee of his, day and night, if the devotee is open to receive it. Most of the time, a miracle is prevented only by lack of faith. Baba is available for any devotee around the clock. But, mostly, people call him only when they need something. This is a sad misuse or under utilization of a great avatar. Inner purity is all you need for materializing miracles. Inner emptiness is all it takes for filling the essence of Sai, the Sai consciousness, into our vessel of existence.
Sai is pure consciousness and cannot be contained in any form, any form. Omniscent, omnipotent and omnipresent.
Sai is pure consciousness and cannot be contained in any one form. Omniscient,  omnipotent and omnipresent.
It was towards the end of 2004 when I had left my job in Iraq and was back in India literally cooling my heels which were quite worn out due to extreme situations that I had faced from almost 1998. I was invited for an interview on the subject of Spirituality and Management. This is way before the meditations came to me and I became known as Mohanji. Those days, I was more recognized in the field of management. The video was shot at a beach in India. And the filming began from the door step of a Sai Temple, close to the beach. That time, even though I had heard the name Sai Baba, I did not quite know anything about Baba, who He was, or where He was or even where Shirdi is. It is my habit to bow down and pay respects to the idols or pictures of any spiritual masters irrespective of religious barriers. That way, I bowed down and touched the feet of the big idol of Baba before I started the interview.
That was the turning point of my life. Soon after the filming, I visited Mumbai. When I visited a book shop, I found myself asking for a Sai Satcharitha. I did not know why I asked for this book. It was not a conscious, pre-planned purchase. Two weeks after I bought the story of Sai, I reached Shirdi. This was indeed His grace, His call.
My first step into the Samadhi Mandir is still like a dream. When we arrived, the night arathi was about to begin. This was in 2004 and the crowd was far less than now. I was not aware of the rituals of Shirdi nor had I heard the Sai Arathi until then. The bells were ringing and I was told the temple will close for public after the night poojas. I ran and reached the samadhi mandir. The arathi had begun. I sat down, looking at the captivating, beautiful statue of Sai.
"Sai, all these people came for your blessings. Please bless everyone!"
“Sai, all these people came for your blessings. Please bless everyone!”
It was like a home coming! I felt totally at home, as if I was there always or at least many times in the past. My body started to have a mild tremor. Goose bumps erupted all over. I felt wave after wave of soothing, mild energy flowing over me and into me. I slipped into a trance. Thoughts vanished. Mind became blank. Just one thought appeared in my mind as a prayer. In my mind I said “Baba, all these people have come for your blessing. Please bless everyone”. I could not ask for anything else.
Almost a month later, I came back to Mumbai. A group of people decided to set up a logistic company in Dubai and they asked me to join in as its CEO. The meeting was set in Mumbai. I was living with my parents in India at that time and had not taken up any job after I left the job in Iraq. I had some savings. But, since Ammucare charity activities gained momentum during my stay in India, my entire savings drained rapidly. I was determined to continue with the charity activities, even if I had to work hard more. Almost all that I ever earned, was spent on charity. Fortunately, since I did not have much expenses of my own, since personal requirements were less, it was easier.
I did not have sufficient money to take the flight and arrange a stay in Mumbai. One of the investing partners knew about this and arranged that. I arrived to Mumbai and they received me at the airport. The friend who arranged my travel and stay had arrived from Bahrain. He had changed his foreign currency and was carrying the Indian rupees in a packet. It was inconvenient for him to carry it in hand. So, he asked me if he could put that in my cabin bag. I handed over my bag to him, which contained my passport, a cheque for Rs.100,000/- which I owed to a property dealer, plus my clothes and the Sai Satcharitha. He kept his money on top of everything and we went to a suitable location to sit down and have the preliminary discussion.
We arrived at a hotel, almost 30 minutes away from the airport. We sat in the lounge and had our preliminary discussion. Since I had to meet other people, I left early. My friend who carried my bag promised to deliver the bag, later in the evening because we were staying at the same place. He left with my bag. He told me, he hired a taxi from the road, kept the bag in the boot, reached the destination, forgot the bag in the car and reached his room. He did not remember the face of the taxi driver as he was sitting in the back seat, nor did he notice the number of the car. He called me and told about this incident. It was a bizarre situation. A real test. My passport and everything else lost. It will take some time before we could make another travel document. In the night, we met for dinner. All were perturbed as my travel to Dubai depended on my passport and my passport is lost. Our plan reached a spontaneous snag. But, the place where we sat and discussed, there was a statue of Sai Baba and I felt that he is looking at me and smiling in a meaningful way. It could be a sign that I should not take up this employment? That was indeed the reason which came out true as one of the partners spoiled the broth and the group eventually got scattered. Anyways, that is besides the point.
After dinner, I thought of calling a friend who is a psychic, not because of the lost bag, but one of the group members wanted to talk to him. He asked me “You seem to be perturbed a bit. What is the problem?” I said “Yeah. I lost my bag”. “Is there a picture book of Bhagawan Sai in it?” He asked. I said “Yes. I have Sai Satcharitha in it”. He said “Don’t worry. Sai will bring it back to you”. I thought, ‘Where will I find the taxi in a colossal concrete quagmire like Mumbai? The taxi driver does not know me, nor do we know the taxi driver. How can we file a complaint with the police station without any details?’
Finally, at midnight, all of us decided to go back to the hotel where we sat and discussed first, when we arrived from the airport. My friend had taken the cab  from outside that hotel. But, then again, the cab did not belong to the hotel. As expected, the receptionist was blank when we asked if anyone had delivered a bag there. We came out, quite dejected. As we came to the gate, the watchman of the hotel asked “Sir, is there no room?” I said “We did not come here for the room. We lost our bag. We came in search of it”. He asked “what is the color and make of your bag?” I explained the details. He replied “Sir, please see if this is your bag!” He produced my bag from his cabin! We opened and looked inside hoping that we have lost nothing. Everything was intact! And on top of everything was the Sai Satcharitha! In fact the Sai Satcharitha was kept at the very bottom of the bag. Who put it on top, above the money? Baba’s grace is indeed above all material wealth. Quite symbolic indeed. This was Baba’s way of conveying who the wire puller was! He had orchestrated the show. Imagine, if the car driver had not checked the boot of his car! Imagine if he had not delivered the bag at this hotel itself! There are many hotels on both sides of the road. How did he bring the bag to this hotel itself! So many probabilities and questions. Once again, Baba proved his presence in my life in the most emphatic way.
Baba's grace is indeed above all material wealth. He orchestrates the show. He is the wirepuller of all events.
Baba’s grace is indeed above all material wealth. He orchestrates the show. He is the wire puller of all events.
Evolution happens in body, mind, intellect and even spiritual stature of an individual each moment. Each one has the potential to transform overnight. So, when we say we know this person or that person, be careful. The person with the level of awareness that you thought you knew would have transformed into a totally different individual overnight. Hence, we must consider each person as totally different each day. This would also take care of most of our agonies related to expectations. This is the truth of existence.
I have been in corporate world for too long and too much. I have worked from a sales executive to the General Manager, Country Manager and CEO in corporate business for close to 24 years in the Middle East. I always had a problem in dealing with treacherous individuals, those who lie, cheat and make everyone’s life miserable. I always believed in truthfulness and straight-forwardness. Many times, I entered into traps of treachery and somehow got out of it without many wounds. This also is true with relationships. Falling in is easy, falling out is painful. The snares of terrestrial relationships have always been difficult for me to handle – being connected to the truthful relationships with the higher. This is also why I could easily see through the core of pseudo spiritualists and could run away from them as fast as I could. I would like to attribute all the effective escapes to the grace of Sai Baba. He has been looking after the formation years of my life and even now. Formation years are times of extreme vulnerability. When you cross over, since visibility is much better, the vulnerability is much lesser, even though the possibility cannot be completely discounted. Often, I found it better to play dumb and totally ignorant in egoistic groups where the pseudo intellectual discussions had no aim and value except pampering someone’s ego. Here, the hand of a higher master becomes very helpful. And Baba is always available to help and guide any sincere devotee. But, who goes to him for the highest?! Most go to Him seeking terrestrial favors! This is the tragedy of human existence. We do not know what we need and what to seek. We do not know what we are and where we are going! We cannot understand a true master from a pseudo master. We worship the priest instead of the God. We think that material richness can make us happy. With material richness, many become spiritually weak. They become mere watchmen of their own wealth and shun even God, developing insecurities of losing the matter! Matter has validity and specific longevity; ignorance makes us crave for permanence. Contamination of existence is nothing else. Great masters of high repute were ridiculed time and again. Those with pomposity and higher visibility were respected. Money became the criterion for respect even in the terrestrial spiritual world. People respect those who spoke well and not those who existed in silence. Again, the higher the noise, the better the acceptance. All masters who existed in silence found it difficult to “speak”. The same was with Baba. Hence Baba was also ridiculed by many during his physical times.
I always wonder about the state of people who steal others’ wealth and possessions and live without any qualms. I have also seen many people who refused to re-pay or pay back their debts, suffering huge losses in life. Many such matters of human existence including cheating, stealing, hoarding, killing, harming helpless beings, victimization – including production of meat, affected me and compelled me from detaching myself from these aspects of the world. What can a super subtle man who only knew to love do in a gross world of in-sensitiveness and deceit? But, as if to test and transform, I was put back into the commercial world, either due to lack of money or due to compulsion from friends which I could not deny. Many times I declared myself as a misfit in the commercial world even though the organizations that I managed achieved good success. I felt that my vulnerability – being in subtlety was increasing day by day.
Many times in between, I left employment and went through situations of no money, no shelter and no food. All these strengthened my faith in God. I never complained. I found the deeper purpose of heating the iron into melting point and also beating it when most vulnerable. A powerful spiritual sword was taking shape. Will of steel probably needed tough hammering indeed to become! During those times of test, even relatives stay away and criticize  So, indirectly, it helped me to shed all expectations from everyone. It also helped me to stand on my own feet especially during crisis and also it removed the fears of having to walk alone. The will was perhaps more from the side of God than this puny, highly perishable individual, I suppose. 🙂 I realized that the capacity for people to see the truth is limited to their senses and predominantly mind. The highest is probably the intellect – the analyzing capacity. These faculties could only deliver relative truths and not real truth. I wanted nothing except the real truth. And I was willing to give anything for that. Nothing else satisfied me. Hence, when I started conducting meditation programs, I used to dedicate them to Baba and use His name as the source. People who could not understand my reason behind this action blamed me of trying to become another “Baba” or claiming that I am Him. Then, in one of the communions, Baba asked me to stop the dedication and use my own name. A saint also said, during the same time “You will be known in your own name.” I attribute this message also to Bhagawan. I would like to believe that He orchestrated everything so that nothing remains mine and I can enjoy my emptiness to the fullest.
It was through Baba that I also came into the roots of the Datta tradition. I also understood the relevance of my gothra when I became aware of the Datta path. This body is born in Bharadwaja Gothra. The same gothra (clan) of almost all the Datta Avatars. I again felt the hands of Baba for putting this soul in this Gothra. Bhagawan Datta, Shiva, Babaji, and Shirdi Sai Baba and Sathya Sai Baba are all one. I cannot see any difference in them. In fact I cannot see any difference in anyone.
Mohanji (1)
I shall conclude this with one more incident which provoked a real shift in my consciousness. I was working as the General Manager of a Logistic Company in Dubai in 2006. I had to attend a conference in Mumbai. Since I had to fly to Mumbai, I decided to also visit Shirdi – quickly before the conference and come back to Mumbai in time for the conference. While waiting for the flight, I thought of calling a friend of mine in India who has psychic abilities. It was late at night. When he picked up my call he smiled and said “Another trip! Eternal journey continues.” I also laughed at the truth in his joke. He asked “This time to see the God?” I said “yes, going to Shirdi as well”. He said “expect a big and life changing miracle. This conference is organized by Him to get you there to give you something precious. He knows that you have no money in your pocket, O man of charity!, with this conference, your company will pay.” I laughed at his good-hearted tease.
When such a thought is put in your mind, that would dominate our thought process. This happened to me too. I started looking for miracles. I had hired a cab to take me from Mumbai airport to Shirdi and bring me back. When I reached Shirdi, after the darshan at Samadhi Mandir, I always like to sit and meditate at Dwarakamai. I love Dwarakamai. It feels like old times always even though I would not want to think about me in another body and my connection with Baba while in that body, if at all. Baba always warns “The urge to know the past in order to re-inforce the present is a clear sign of insecurity. No true devotee should have that. If the past has to be revealed, it will be”. I also wanted to offer some quality materials to the Dhuni of Baba inside Dwarakamai. I requested the taxi driver to get me some good material for the fire place, and waited outside Dwarakamai. When he brought the materials, we went inside. The entry and exit were demarcated and guards watched both the doors. Once entered, one has to keep moving. Crowd was huge. I decided that I will not be able to sit inside and meditate in this trip, which made me a bit sad. We offered the materials to the fire and started to come out. The driver of cab was behind me. As I moved closer to the door, an old man came through the exit entrance with a child, grabbed my hand over my biceps and commanded “Sar idhar rakho” (Put your head here) and pointed at a small pillar. Baba used to sit leaning against that pillar when he used to live in Dwarakamai. I spontaneously obeyed. I was already in a thoughtless state. I knelt down and touched my head on the pillar and got up. There were many people behind me, in the queue. I was worried that the guards will shove us out. But, none seemed to notice the incident. Even the cab driver went past me. Then I got up. The old man patted on my back and said “Abhi Jao” (Go now). I obeyed without thinking. I came out and was a bit disturbed because I could not sit and meditate in Dwarakamai. Nevertheless, we started on our return journey to Mumbai and I called my psychic friend. As soon as he got my call, he asked “So, Bhagawan came and met you! Isn’t it a BIG Miracle?”. You could imagine my situation. “Oh my God. In that confusion, I forgot about the miracle and also did not think it would be Baba himself. He also had a child with him and then I realized that it was Ammu, my daughter whom I lost in 2000 in a tragic road accident. I did not look at the child at all. So many people and confusions and the setting was well made by Baba to avoid all my distractions and thoughts! I told my friend “Oh, I should not touch His feet”. He said “Oh you did. When you touched your head on the pillar at His command, you have touched the feet of the tradition. Good enough. Go on now. Life will never be the same again.”
Further to this, I have had many experiences and many of my followers also had many experiences, which I would presume that they themselves would narrate and share with you, if they liked to do so. I cannot and should not do that on their behalf.  I would like to conclude this humble narration with my most humble prostrations at the Lotus feet of the Great Avatar Sai Baba. I can write a book about Him. I have done three blogs about Him and no words can ever explain Him.
I would also like to thank Swami Govindananda of Himalayas who gave me a picture of Baba from his altar and said “Mohan, Sai Baba lives in your third eye”.  And to Bala Sai who delivered Baba’s message to me to return back to India and His promise that He will live with me! I consider this as a priceless message and confirmation. Sai temple will come up in Datta Tapovan if He so wills. The late Sri Balachandran, while coming back after Darsan at Shirdi and while entering his car, a man came and delivered a heavy packet and said “This is for the Sai temple that will be built. Sai sent this for you”. He turned to offer some money to the messenger of Baba, he had already vanished. He opened the packet and saw that they were marble feet of Baba. We were getting ready to build a Sai temple at Ammucare village site in Kerala. Due to financial deficiency, it did not happen. Now, most probably, the feet of Baba will decorate Datta Tapovan. http://www.dattatapovan.com
My humble prostrations at the feet of the grand Datta Tradition and the glorious gothra of Sage Bharadwaja to which I am lucky to belong.
My only prayer to Baba is “Bless All, Baba, for all are seeking your grace, knowingly or unknowingly.”
Aum Sai Ram

Seek Nothing!

Seek NOTHING….YOU ARE THAT!!!

When Human Evolves Into the Subtlety That Creates Him/Her, He Knows GOD….

It was a rainy day morning in 2004. Rain-drenched trees and grass looked fresh and serene, in the shy, peeping sun. I was observing the divine glory of the nature, in silence. The communion was overwhelming. Nature was at its best. Soon, a small car pulled up and “Cathy” broke the silence and entered into my physical horizon. I had forgotten that we had a randesvouz that morning, as I was deeply absorbed in the subtlety of nature and was quite reluctant to come out of it. When the subtle silence of the nature merges with the silence within, we truly become the ocean of silence.

When our Mind accompanies our eyes, we see what is in front of us. When mind is completely removed, we see the Universe!

A few minutes later, we sat down with a hot cup of tea watching the rain. Cathy soon took out her paper and pen and off we started on a discussion which she wanted to use for her article in a magazine. Words only belong to us before they are uttered. Once uttered, they belong to the universe. So, nobody owns these ideas and corresponding words. Here we go…

C: Mohanji, an average human “seeks” something his whole life. Why?

M: Because, he does not know what exactly he is seeking. He runs after the glitters of life. He seeks externally, eternally. He does not know that what he seeks lies within himself. He does not know that there is nothing to seek. We seek something that we do not have, right? What do we lack at all? Seeking something not knowing what is sought, literally takes lifetimes away. This eternal seeking continues over generations.

Seek NOTHING! All that you seek is within you. We seek knowledge, pleasures, possessions and even enlightenment as if it is a commodity! 🙂 What ever we seek, eludes us constantly. We get frustrated. We miss the whole point. We go after books, gurus, ideas, various types of spiritual practices, relationships, money, love, food, sex….. And? There you go. Nothing works. Finally, at last, wisdom arises. Then, we start to unlearn, shed our skins of accumulations, one by one. So, first we insanely accumulate and then we struggle to give up, just like we cram food into our stomachs, we over eat and then we sweat and struggle to shed weight. 🙂  Many fears arise while shedding and they often wreak havoc. Finally, finally, when we become totally naked and empty, elevation in consciousness takes place. We get ready to dissolve. The path lies within us. The destination lies within us. There is nothing to seek outside. This eternal truth is difficult to comprehend and even more difficult to apply in life.

C: So, (visibly confused) what do we seek?

M: SEEK NOTHING. YOU ARE THAT. Instead of seeking, watch yourself, watch everything. Observe everything. Things are happening through us. We are not doing anything. Everything is within us. When we keenly observe ourselves with a child-like wonder, all duality will disappear. Expectations will disappear. We will start feeling the subtle power of supreme consciousness that runs through all beings like a thread joining beads and you will find the perfect symmetry of life in its large canvass.

We travel miles and miles in search of peace, while peace really lies within us. We seek external gurus, while the Guru Principle is already within us, built into our own consciousness. When seeking becomes too external, peace eludes us. Action replaces silence. We wander away from our true home and sometimes even lose our way. Then, it takes lifetimes to get back “home”. Do you understand me? 🙂

C: Well. I guess so… 😦   When will we truly reach this understanding?

M: When eligibility is right. Conscious, consistent effort is essential.

C: What could be a potential deterrent?

M: Inertia. Inertia is the cancer. It deters our determination. It wastes lives. It wastes lifetimes.

Mind Projects Glorious Images and traps us in Imagination….

C: What is inertia?

M: Tamas or Inertia is part of us. That part of us that gently guides, suggests us to sleep, plus our innate lethargy, postponement and escapism, anger and defensiveness, are all aspects of tamas. Everything that handicaps us, is tamas. Everything that binds us is tamas. Postponement and lazy inaction is tamas. Purposelessness is Tamas. Intellectual churning, constant analysis which leads to subsequent inaction, is tamas. Tamas is our inherent enemy, one that stays with us, within us always, and only manifests during our waking hours. It induces procrastination and brings forth a series of failures – even life gets totally wasted due to its influence. Craving for tamasic food such as old food, flesh of living beings (meat), alcohol, etc. are all signs of inherent tamas. Some proudly boast that they hate vegetarian food!!. They have no idea how much they are exposing their own weak constitution this way. 🙂 Tamas is our constant companion and mostly responsible for all our seeming failures of life. Beware of Tamas. Be aware of tamas.

C: What or who is the enemy of Tamas?

M: Rajas. Action. The best medicine to counter tamas is compulsive action. Action for the sake of it. Work hard. Only entertain adequate sleep. Organise yourself. Do not postpone things. Believe, decide that there will be no tomorrow and today is the only space in time that you have for yourself to fulfill and complete all that you have to do. Do everything today. Do not look or strive for too much satisfaction and absolute perfection. There should be adequate perfection, and more than that, there should be adequate attention, consistency and application. If rajas is expressed on the platform of selflessness, spiritual glory is accessible to you.

C: What is the role of Satwa?

M: Satwa is the ideal state of equanimity. Absolute objectivity is its sign. Unconditional Love, Selflessness and Compassion are its spontaneous expressions. It is difficult to stay in that plane. Just like a day has only three hours of satwic time, (approximately from 3AM to 6AM)  in order to exist in that level of consciousness is a tall order for an average man, one who lives in the routine world that we see around us. An average man is predominantly tamasic, then rajasic and seldom satwic. Even one who visits temples, churches or mosques, and one who is always immersed in chanting and worship may not be in the realms of sattwa. You need keen observation to understand its subtlety. When Rajasic mode shifts to selflessness, man touches the realms of sattwa. Still he could fall back into rajas or inertia at anytime. We can see even saints wasting their lives in relative luxury and pomposity, falling prey to tamas. Tamas is indulgence, compulsive indulgence and its associated slavery.

Nature Teaches Invaluable Lessons, Especially in Detachment. We need to develop “eyes” to see…

C: Understood. I am getting the picture. Mohanji, why are YOU, so elusive?

M: 🙂  Am I elusive? You are talking to me and I am answering your questions the way I can. 🙂  I am indeed an introvert who enjoys isolation a lot. Tell me what will I gain in the market place? Most of the things that the society offers, especially the sensory objects, have little value for me. I have seen it all. Tasted it all, over life times. Only through accomplishing it can we overcome it. We need to taste it to overcome it. Avoidance does not amount to eradication. When we entertain the feeling of lacking something, it will stay rooted as the seed of a wish in our mind, until its total fulfillment.

C: 🙂 I truly believe you, when you say you are in isolation. That is why we took so long to meet. 🙂 You kept postponing. 🙂

M: HA HA. Well, I was not too sure if there was a real purpose for this meeting. Just idling or wasting time discussing sweet nothings or gossiping about other people is not really my cup of tea. What do we achieve with all that? Instead, if we could use the time to float in the silence within, that will be much more meaningful. What do I have to give you, anyway, which you do not have already? 🙂 We are crazy for knowledge. What do we do with that? Do we ever convert that into wisdom and elevate ourselves? Has it delivered inner peace? Still we crave for more, more food, more emotional entanglements, and more knowledge. Still we wander in search of the “right location” to find inner peace. No location can give you inner peace. Inner peace essentially expresses itself, when mind is calmed. It will be obvious and unmistakable. Analysis and comparisons are a waste of time. Accept what you can consume. Reject what you cannot consume. It is as simple as that. None can force anything on anyone nor should they attempt to do that. This is violence. Violence of all kinds disturbs the collective inner peace. Tons of literature also will not help gain inner peace. Reading becomes another kind of escapism, equal to looking for the “right environment”. Instead, choosing to drop the baggage of compulsive habits and resorting to the silence within will help you much more. You will become self-sufficient. The ability to do this, you already have. What more can I give you? Why come to see me? See the GOD Almighty shining in the eyes of the poor and abandoned people, hungry birds and animals. Make them smile and remain contented. That will elevate you. I am telling this with due respects to you and your good intentions though. Now you cannot complain that I am rude and arrogant. 🙂

When we are “wonderfuelled”, Everything is a Miracle..Every breath is a Miracle….

C: Aha! Thank You. 🙂  A different subject – Why are miracles not happening these days, like many books have told us?

M: What is a miracle, according to you? Your very life itself is a miracle. Observe it keenly, observe yourself every moment, you will understand. How delicately and carefully has an ANT been created! How delicately and carefully a human baby is created! Cell by cell, everything at its right place!!! Look at the color combination of those flowers out there. Who is waking up those birds right on time, everyday; and who is making them sing so beautifully? Isn’t this whole universe truly wonderful? If you are “wonderfuelled”, you will be like a child and a child is its own master.

We cannot help but wonder at the beauty of creation from an atom to the universe…

Remember, all the so called human discoveries have been just another human attempt to see the fundamentals of already created materials. The core of every mass is energy. Our scientists still cannot conglomerate energy and mold it into desired objects at will. That is the fundamental principle of creation. Are we not far away from it?

C: Actually, my question is, there are great masters now, and there have been great masters before. There has been many avatars. Still, why is poverty and inequality existing on earth?

M: Who will question human will? Who wants to? All that we enjoy is created by us. Poverty and Prosperity are our own creation. When a man entertains selfishness and poverty consciousness, he must experience poverty in real life. Even if you distribute the whole wealth of the world evenly among all the people on earth, believe me, it will go back and conglomerate into a few hands, just like before. This is the law of karma. Man creates his destiny every moment. In the absolute sense, there is only clay, the supreme consciousness; all the shapes are our creation. So, why should or how could any avatar or master interfere? If I interfere in your decisions or even suggest my opinion, will you not revolt against me? 🙂  When we fall helpless and seek a helping hand, they do lift us up. They have done so in the past, they will do so in the future too. Guides are aplenty, but who has the time to follow them? And even if we get a good guide, we hardly know how to use him/her. We will still compare him with another, complain, and invariably find something lacking in him. This is human nature. Human mind can never be satisfied or contented. I have spoken a lot in the past. I have indeed cooked a lot of food for the world. Do you believe that someone has understood them, chewed them well and digested them?  Likewise, many have spoken, many have guided many. People are still on crossroads.

Mind leaves us at the crossroads always. It prevents understanding. It prevents silence and elevation. It discriminates. It destroys too. Detachment, objective observation and non-interference are the ways to bring the mind in your control. Only by getting closer and closer to the warmth of your soul can you effectively get away from the iron clutches of tamas and your mind. Only when your soul effectively fills into your inner space, will you experience real contentment. Sat-Chit- Ananda. While walking that path, there is no room for cramming in knowledge, analysis and comparisons; let alone criticisms and judgments of oneself and others.

Every Dimension is our Extension. If we fail to realize this, we will feel isolated and lonely…

C: What if I disagree?

M: 🙂 You have the full right. You must disagree. 🙂 In a way, disagreement amounts to individuality. But, as we evolve further and further, we may start to agree with what we disagreed with in the past. With better understanding and spiritual maturity, things will seem different. Remember, the dates in the calendar are much closer than they appear. 🙂 We are here only for a very limited time. We can neither stretch it nor reduce it.

C: 🙂 Subtly, you are pulling my leg. But, getting back to the original question, these higher entities can certainly perform miracles…

M: If the Avatars and Masters wanted to wipe out life on earth, they easily could. They do possess that power. But, it would be intervention into your free will. If I encroach into your privacy, will you tolerate that? You may even kill me. Moreover, remember that all Avatars and Masters always obeyed the rules of earth, while on earth, perfectly well. They ate food, used toilets, slept, suffered from diseases and old age and died too. Obeying the rules of earth would mean all the changes in body, desires of the mind, and even diseases in their body. They went through the process of childhood, youth, old age and eventual dissolution. Why did they have to go through these sufferings? Why could not they just appear, take a human form at will, and disappear at will? They came here to demonstrate dharma to us, using their own life. The life of every saint or Avatar is a lesson by itself. Their lives itself are their biggest messages. If they chose to be different from others and kind of all powerful and almighty, we will find that as an escapism to shrink into our own shell of tamas. 🙂 We are eternal escapists, aren’t we? 🙂 Hence, a real saint or an avatar will do everything that you do, so that you could connect with him or her. You could resonate with them. You could identify with them. Look at the life of Krishna. How much has He influenced the lives of generations and still continues to do so, just with His very life!!! Everyone can identify with him in some way or many ways. A child, a son, a lover, a husband, a father, a friend, a warrior, a politician, a vedantin, and above all, an Avatar.

Sri Rama was also an Avatar. He was indeed powerful. Why did he need the support of the army of monkeys (vanar sena) to destroy Ravana and rescue Seetha? Does an Avatar need support? Indeed He was very powerful. If He just used his power and performed miracles, there would be no Ramayana. Even if there would have been a Ramayana, it would have been just a fantastic, but totally un-achievable story, that can be performed only by a God, something we cannot identify with, and perhaps giving fancy to many fantastic super God – like hero movies. Now, there are many valuable truths such as Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema being elucidated through the epic Ramayana. Rama behaved like an ordinary man, a son, father, husband, so on and so forth, so that all of us can identify ourselves in some aspect, if not all, with Rama and Ramayana. Seldom did He display his true potential, just like all of us. We are all infinite Ramas. When do we actually behave like one? We have immense powers and potential. When will we shed our mental blocks and display them? So, please understand that all those higher entities that graced earth, behaved like human beings and underwent the law of time.

Who are We? Where are we from? This is man’s eternal quest….

C: It makes me wonder, are you from earth or outside earth?

M: It does not really matter. Just try to enjoy the food that I prepare. If it is not good for you, throw it away. Nobody is watching you or judging you on this one. 🙂

People have their ways and reasons too…Keep Walking Unaffected….

C: If people know that, don’t you think they will look at you with more respect?

M: 🙂 People are usually skeptical. They will not believe anyway. 🙂 They will look at me as a pretender and a propagandist. People like to believe more in scandals than search for the truth. They like to gossip and not evolve and liberate themselves. Ego does not permit apologies! Ego does not permit even beautiful relationships. Everything is seen through the eyes of a potential scandal, thus restricting the walking space of a liberated saint. Imagine the Guru is an alcoholic and womanizer. If his teachings are not good for you, it does not matter to you, does it? So, discard the Guru and his teachings. Now, imagine the Guru is an alcoholic and womanizer AND his teachings are good for your personal growth. It does not matter how your guru is, right? Just accept the teachings and discard the Guru. So, it does not really matter. Spirituality should never become a handicap for anyone. Spirituality means liberation from mundane bindings, even though it is definitely not a license for cheating and raping innocent devotees.

Are we not the same people who crucified Jesus? Are we not the ones who gave poison to Socrates? We even took the Great Master Shirdi Sai Baba to the court! We never accepted any saint when they were in their body. We glorify them after they were dead or killed. This is our nature. That is why our tradition insists us to respect our parents, our teachers and even our guests as God. We belong to a rich tradition of acceptance and love. Time has changed. Respect is a rarity. Today, relationships are based on usefulness and that too, mostly, commercial usefulness. There are many traps and quagmires in the path of spirituality. We certainly get what we deserve. So, it is advisable to accept life as it comes. People can express only their available consciousness which is varied and different from person to person. We cannot understand or appreciate another person’s dimension fully and completely. This is the truth of our existence. Then, how can one fully understand the consciousness of a Saint? This is why many people considered Akkalkot Maharaj and Shirdi Sai Baba as mad men. They were two of the greatest masters earth had ever seen. Datta Avatars!!!

Who craves for respect? Respect created through fear or compulsion has no longevity. Respect should happen by itself. Respect should happen from clear understanding of the stature of the Guru. Then it stays. Just like the money and fame earned through bad deeds does not last and often will not come handy when required the most, emotions have very short longevity. They die as soon as they take birth. People love scandals. Even if there are no truths behind scandals, the fertile human minds will weave their own truths. Awareness is the only medicine or remedy to cure jealousy, hatred, anger and all other evils. Awareness needs eligibility. Eligibility is attained through Viveka or the ability or wisdom to segregate truth from untruth, gossips or rumors, and staying with the truth against all odds. I have seen people coming with expectations and leaving with hatred towards me and my path. I lose nothing here. So, I do not give much importance to human emotions. They come and go. Who knows who will be with us tomorrow?

C: Seek Nothing… It bothers me. I feel as if there is nothing to live for.

M: This is because we are slaves of our mind and senses. They exist to seek everything. When you shift from your senses and your mind to intellect, you will feel the difference. When you shift from intellect and ego to your soul, you will seek nothing anymore. The seeker becomes the sought. They are one. You are that.

C: Hmm. What is Crystal Lotus?

M: The symbol of purity. Lotus remains pure and unattached even while existing in the mud. Water cannot drench it. Gods rest on the eternally pure lotus and display their presence at times. It is the symbol of subtlety and detachment. Nothing affects a lotus. It lives and dies in purity. A crystal lotus has no birth nor death. It symbolizes purity and faith.

C: What creates anger?

M: Unfulfilled Expectations. Tamas.

C: What creates hatred and jealousy?

M: Ignorance. Tamas.  The common factor in all negative emotion is Tamas or inertia.

Every Sunrise is fulfillment of an Eternal Dharma….We may fail to see its glory…

C: “B” says that you are as slippery as a fish.

M: 🙂 HA HA. A fish is so supple and fluid. This is a good state to be in, especially in the spiritual path. I hope slippery does not mean escapism 🙂 . Being unavailable is not a bad idea. Those who really need us will reach us, one way or the other. Being too available will also induce situations where you are taken for granted. Also, why should you be available always at all? 🙂 “B” does not know me. He swayed when people talked bad things about me. He forgot his own experiences with me and chose to marry others’ words. When you disown your own experiences and choose others’ words and circulate it, your spiritual progress ends there. You slip down a lot and it takes lifetimes to climb back to your earlier spiritual stature. Gossip mongers may find pleasure while spreading it, but, will suffer a lot to come clean from that karma. It is like an acute diabetic choosing to consume an ice cream. He will enjoy it, while at it and will have to endure lots of medicines and treatment to overcome the effects of this paltry pleasure. I only pity those who have to resort to these ways. They have no idea what they are doing and what the consequences are. They are in fact doing me a great favor. Those who were on the borderline, decided to go away and those who are really connected with me, came closer. Only they will be benefited, anyhow. Now, imagine what ever they said is true, just compare their words with your own experience and determine which has more weight. Use your intellect, your discriminatory powers wisely.

Now, I may behave like a “slippery fish” because, people try to put me in frames. Frames restrict. I constantly break frames. I am walking the path of liberation. I destroy anything that binds me, owns me. I  behave differently from their expectations so that they get disillusioned. This is my style of non-conformity. Those who get disillusioned, will drop off. Those who stay, will grow with me too. Those who entertain huge expectations from anyone, always suffer. This is the law of karma.

Nature is not tired of its creations. How can We?…. 🙂

C: Will you not get tired?

M: Being tired is Tamas. When you are forced to do what you do not want to do, tamas takes over. Tiredness is a sign of tamas. I love my mission. I am here to do that. I do not get tired. Once again, abundance is a perpetual state. This is also applicable in terms of energy.

C: What about giving? Won’t you deplete yourself?

M: A well never depletes itself, even if many buckets of water is removed from it. Fresh water immediately replaces the water that the bucket removed and maintains its water-level. The well remains constant. It is not the same with the bucket. It depletes itself when water is poured out completely. So, depletion depends on your stature. If you are a well, you will never be depleted. If you are a bucket, you will be. So, now you can decide what is what. 🙂

Memories drag us back into the past, Life moves ahead…No wave stays in the air forever… 🙂

C: Won’t individual consciousness contaminate the super consciousness?

M: HA HA! I like that. Look at the oceans! Many rivers of the continents pour much water into the oceans. Ocean remains the same. Likewise, consciousness is vast and unfathomable, a trillion times larger than the vast oceans of earth. Water can get contaminated. Consciousness can never get contaminated, just like your soul, which can never get contaminated and always stays neutral, aiding you, but not interfering in your lifestyle, what ever your lifestyle is. Individual consciousness, even when it becomes collective, cannot contaminate the vast super consciousness. Everything is nullified and dissolved in it, eventually. Bubbles exist for sometime on the water. Then, it dissolves. Likewise, individual consciousness stays afloat for sometime and merges into the super consciousness. Nothing remains for ever. Nothing has permanence, except the supreme consciousness.

C: That is interesting. What exactly is permanent?

M: The supreme consciousness, what some call the “Father”. Everything came out of it and everything goes back into it. Everything is projected out of the Father and everything is called back as well. The Father remains silent forever. The Father silently observes everything. Just like your conscience observes all your thoughts, words and actions, without interference, the Father watches the plays of life in the vast universe, objectively, unemotionally. 🙂

C: What is good? What is bad?

M: Nothing is either good or bad, in the absolute sense. All are just experiences. Just sundry experiences. So, my dear accumulation oriented man, think again, what exactly are you accumulating? Nothing actually belongs to you forever. 🙂

C: Do you operate in multiple consciousness?

M: Yes. I do. Simply speaking, in the limited consciousness associated with this body called Mohan and the higher conscious state which is well beyond this body called Mohan. All people do. But, the difference is, most do not know that they do, because they lead an unconscious existence. That is why they get surprised at certain revelations or messages that eventually come true. Even though I am trying to explain this in simple terms, this aspect has multiple facets. The distance between the limited and unlimited is sometimes huge and sometimes non-existent. We are simultaneously both. So, usually when we are angry, sad, depressed, disheartened, weak, etc, we are operating in the limited consciousness. When we tap into the higher realm and source subtle truths of existence, we are operating in the higher consciousness. I am explaining this in a tangible way only for understanding’s sake. This is a very deep subject.

We can see the expressions of our non-understanding in every segment in the form of emotions and expectations. In the education segment, especially. We fail to see the talent of our children and get immersed into molding them as another brick for the wall. We are afraid of risks and opt for safe bets. 🙂 A fish is powerful and comfortable in the water. That is its natural habitat. Our education system tries hard to make it climb a tree and in the end, call it a failure! 🙂 We expect a fish to climb a tree and in the bargain, we destroy the fish. Thus,we are destroying our next generation. Once their talents are crushed, they become insensitive and that is the reason for the gross insensitiveness that we see all around us. None cares. None are happy too. All complain, criticize one another and find pleasure in pointing fingers at one another rather than connecting to their own inner space, establish peace and share peace. When we give wind to the wings of our children, they soar confidently. When we trim their wings out of our fear and anxiety, they are crippled forever. We are what we make ourselves to be. We should always remember that.

The Eyes of the Universe are Always Open. In the abundance of its glory, who wants to sleep? 🙂

Krishna – The Eternal Romantic

The Great Lord, The Avatar, The Supreme Consciousness…

Krishna – An Avatar born to demonstrate the depth of Divine Love to the world. An avatar born to preserve the dharma of eternal love. An avatar born to spread the fragrance of unconditional love. What an avatar!!! When man crosses the boundaries of duality, there is nothing but unity, bliss and divine love. The essence of bliss is love. Unconditional love. Lord Krishna represented that state of beingness, Being in Love with everything around oneself, because everything around is essentially oneself. When overflowing emotions turn into devotion, bliss happens. The devotee and the Lord become one. There is no separation anymore. There is no God without his devotee and there is no devotee without the God that he worships. It is a relative existence. When the thin line of duality melts in devotion, eternal romance takes place. The true Ras Leela happens here. It is romance between the supreme consciousness and the limited consciousness aspiring to melt into the supreme consciousness.

The Unconditional Love of the Lord flows eternally…

The Non-Duality in Bhakti

Poonthanam – A Devotee Par Excellence..

In the small state of Kerala, located at the southern tip of India, between 1547-1640AD , lived a great Krishna devotee. His family name was Poonthanam. People called him by his family name. He lost his only child in an accident and this intense sorrow brought him into devotion towards the supreme – Lord Krishna as Guruvayoorappan. When the physical world around us falls apart through death and destruction, we spontaneously gravitate towards God. Krishna transformed his sorrow into Bhakti. He used to say: “When the eternal Lord,  “my little Krishna”, is always playing in my mind, why do I need other children?” Poonthanam was a simple man, brahmin by birth (caste), a pure vegetarian and a humble, poor man. He used to spend his time chanting the manthras of Krishna at the Guruvayoor Temple, dissolving in Krishna Consciousness. The deity of Guruvayoor temple is Lord Krishna as of 8 years of age, in other words, it is “Little Krishna” indeed.

The Amazingly Beautiful Lord of Guruvayoor!

Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu (Air) installed the idol of Lord Krishna, says the tradition. Since Guru and Vayu together installed the idol, the deity is called Guruvayoorappan. That means, the Lord of the land of Guru and Vayu. This place is also called “Bhooloka Vaikunta” or the Vaikunta (Lord Vishnu’s abode) of earth. It is also said that this is the same idol that Vasudeva, Lord Krishna’s father used to worship.

Coming back to our story, Poonthanam’s bhakti (devotion) was silent, but highly potent. Since he was quite unassuming at all times, wearing simple clothes and keeping to himself, people generally ignored him. Out of overflowing love for the Lord, he wrote in his native Malayalam language verses about the shallowness of our mundane existence, as well as praising the Lord. His work is called “Njanappana”.

There was another great Krishna Bhakta who used to visit the temple often. His name was Melpathoor Narayana Bhattathiri. He was a great scholar. Poonthanam approached the scholarly Bhattathiri to correct the mistakes of his simple work. Bhattathiri, being a great Sanskrit scholar, looked down upon the simple brahmin’s colloquial work and discarded it unceremoniously. The story goes that soon Bhattathiri was hit by paralysis and he prayed to Lord Krishna to cure him. Then he heard a voice from nowhere telling him: “I Love Poonthanam’s simple and pure Bhakti much more than your knowledge.” Bhattahiri repented, immediately called for Poonthanam, took his work in his own hands and corrected it the best he could. He thus got cured of the disease.

Narayana Bhattathiri author of Narayaneeyam. Bhakti (Devotion)Always is holier than the Knowledge and associated ego.

Another version of the same story says that, the night after he rejected the work of Poonthanam, while he sat to read out his own Narayaneeyam verses on Lord Guruvayoorappan, a little boy appeared at his house. A beautiful boy. Bhattathiri allowed him to sit next to him and started chanting. In the first stanza itself, there were mistakes. As he proceeded to the second and third, the little boy pointed out more mistakes. Bhattathiri realized that this is no ordinary boy and it must be Lord Guruvayoorappan. Immediately, he got up and prostrated at the feet of the boy. When he got up, there was none around. The little boy had disappeared!!! At that point in time, he heard the boy’s voice: “I like Poonthanam’s purity and devotion much more than your knowledge and associated ego.” Bhattathiri repented and immediately organised himself to correct the work of Poonthanam – which is called Njanappana or The Song of Wisdom.

Poonthanam wished to go to Vaikunth (The abode of Lord Vishnu) in his physical body, at the time of his death. Krishna granted him that wish. Then he requested Lord Krishna that he should also be permitted to take those who are close to him, to accompany him to the abode of Lord Vishnu. Every Guru and God melts at the requests of any true and sincere devotee. Krishna being the Guru of the Universe, could not deny the wish of a sincere and innocent bhakta. He agreed. Poonthanam knew the exact time of his demise. He told his near and dear about the time of his death and informed them that if any of them want to join him in his final journey to Vaikunth, to live at the feet of the Supreme Lord and enjoy his bliss (Vishnu Consciousness) and blessing for ever, he could indeed arrange for their journey in their physical body too.

Vaikunt, The Abode of Lord Vishnu..

Skeptical, intellectual, logical, egoistic and analytical as people are, everybody started mocking him. They said that he has gone insane. Some laughed at him as if he was joking about such a serious matter. One man asked him: “My brother, first of all, gross body belongs to the earth. At the time of death, subtle body leaves the gross and travels on its own. We burn or bury the gross and thus offer it back to earth. Only subtle body can travel upwards as it is not bound by gravitation. Moreover, in order to enter the realms of Lord Vishnu, which is even more subtler than the subtlety of our soul, even our soul is incapacitated to enter; or even our soul needs further purification to enter Vishnu loka. And you are saying that you will go there in your gross body!!! Are you crazy?” Poonthanam said “My brother, I do not have knowledge about these matters such as subtlety of soul etc. I know only one thing. I love Krishna. I trust Krishna. I have full faith in Krishna and he promised to take me with my body to His abode. And I am going. You are welcome too.” Everyone thought that he has indeed gone insane. Nobody took him seriously except his old house maid. She believed that Poonthanam is sane and is talking truth. She asked him ” Swami, will you take me?” Innocent Poonthanam said spontaneously: “Why not, all are welcome.” At the appointed time, as previously announced by Poonthanam, both himself and his old maid disappeared from where they were standing. Krishna kept his promise to His bhakta. Poonthanam carved a golden message in history, that nothing is impossible for a true devotee and also thus proved the depth of his devotion. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE for a true BHAKTA (Devotee). The Lord makes sure that a true devotee’s  minutest wish is carefully fulfilled!!!

All Beings big and small are part of the Lord.

What else can you give except Love to the world, when we need nothing from the world and our very existence itself is based on compassion? When there is no expectation, that space in mind gets filled with unconditional love. Expectation is the biggest treason for all mortals. It alienates one from the other. An Avatar of the stature of Krishna always existed only in the realms of Unconditional Love. “Me and my devotee are ONE!!!”

When we were born, the distance between us and our self was very short. We were very close to our soul. As we grew older, we traveled through the paths of karma far and wide. We even lost our way home or got caught up in the world of sensory pleasures outside. We even picked up habits and addictions which we cannot live without, and thus bound ourselves into immobility too! We forgot or ignored our real home, as we were too fascinated with the world external. We forgot our mother, our soul, waiting at home for us. We even forgot to recognize her existence, far away. But, all this while, we possessed the power to get back home in an instant, if we wanted to. But, with the entertainment outside, the winning and losing outside, the taste of terrestrial romance kept us occupied in the world of illusions and kept us busy.

When we come back home and connect to our own mother, our own Guru – our very soul, we see that we are one with the soul that makes the Lord too. We are one with the consciousness that is Krishna. Holding the safe hand of the mother, our soul, we could dissolve into the consciousness of Krishna and be one with that supreme consciousness always.

How can words explain the Love of the Lord?

I remember a story in this regard. Once a few Yadavas felt a deep urge to see Krishna who was living at the other side of the river Yamuna. They prepared tasty and colorful sweets out of cow’s milk which Krishna loved. They packed everything and walked towards the river Yamuna to cross over to see Krishna. When they reached the bank of the river, their hearts sank as they found that the river was quite swollen and overflowing. Yamuna was flooding. There was no boatman willing to take them to the other side. They were terribly disappointed. They assembled under a tree and discussed their next action. They all decided to go back home as there was no other option to cross the river. There was nothing else they could possibly do, with the current state of Yamuna, as the flood could possibly continue for more days. As they took a few steps, they saw a saint sitting and meditating under a big banyan tree. They decided to pay respects to the saint. They silently approached the saint, so as not to disturb his penance and gently sat in front of him, waiting for him to open his eyes.

About an hour later, the sage opened his eyes. It was Sage Vyasa. Vyasa looked at the people assembled in front of him and asked why they have come there. They explained their plan and their predicament. Vyasa asked “What is in this big bag that you are carrying?” They explained that these are sweets that Krishna loved. He told them to open it and show the sweets to him. When they showed him, he started eating them. The Yadava travelers could not object to it, because they knew that he is a powerful saint and they did not want to upset him. Finally, Vyasa, who seemed to be very hungry, consumed half of what they had brought for Krishna. Vyasa said, “I will help you to cross the river. Pack the balance and give it to Krishna.” Yadavas obeyed the saint.

Vyasa walked with them until the bank of the river and shouted: “If I have not eaten anything, let the river part.” Immediately the river parted and the travelers crossed to the other side. They were quite amazed with this miracle. A few minutes after reaching the other shore of Yamuna, they saw Krishna resting in a garden chair. They approached him and exchanged greetings. Then they apologetically offered the remaining part of the sweets that Vyasa had consumed, to Krishna. Krishna said “I cannot eat even one piece of it!!. Just now, I filled my stomach with the same stuff.”  Then the Yadavas realized the meaning of what Vyasa had uttered. “If “I” have not eaten anything, let the river part”. “I” is the egocentric entity. Vyasa is one with Krishna in consciousness. He did not take ownership of anything. He did not have “I” ness. So, when he ate, it was actually Krishna who was consuming, as they were one consciousness. The whole epic Mahabharatha is Vyasa’s work. When our consciousness merges, there is no duality in existence. There is only a pure and Divine Unity. The Yadavas realized that Vyasa positioned himself under the tree just to aid them, who are sincere devotees of Krishna, to reach Krishna. Everything was part of the Divine Leela!!!

Devotion is the highest of romance. A true devotee’s unconditional romance is equal to the highest cosmic romance. It has no comparison to the expectation-based terrestrial romance. Faith is the rope of steel that holds a devotee to the Lord. It is unshakable. Divine Romance is unshakable. If we can cross over from terrestrial romance to divine romance, our whole world will be filled with the sweet fragrance of pure love. We will not be bound or dependent on uncertain human relationships, which are always conditional and emotion-based. When we cross from this realm of emotions into the realm of supreme devotion, we will be purpose-bound and not expectation-bound.

Romance is universal. All saints are eternal romantics. When you cross into the realms of true bhakti, there will only be romance in our heart. We can only see God in every being and we romance the God in every being. Every object is God. We will love every object as representation of God. This is the truth too.

A Great Devotee in an Elephant’s Body – Guruvayoor Kesavan

The romance of Lord Krishna knows no boundaries. He is a complete avatar. Several beings took birth as birds and animals to be close to the Lord, when He existed in His body. Many beings take birth to be close to the Lord even now. The story of a devotee in the body of an elephant is quite an example. (Many devotees offer cows, rabbits, birds and elephants to Lord Krishna at Guruvayoor, as a demonstration of their devotion.) The name of this famous elephant was Guruvayoor Kesavan. He was donated to Guruvayoor temple by the Nilambur Royal Family in 1916. He served the Lord in the temple for all processions, festivals and ceremonies until his death in 1976. Even his death was on the auspicious day of Guruvayoor Ekadasi, the day when devotees observe fasting, (refrain from eating food) for the sake of attaining Moksha or Liberation from the birth – death cycle. The elephant also observed fast that day and turning towards the temple, looking at the temple, with his trunk raised as if saluting the Lord, he left his body and attained his Moksha. It does not matter if it is human being or an elephant. Love conquers all. Eternal love unmistakably flows from the Lord to all beings, who are receptive to it.

Love is eternal. Love is Divine, when it is unconditional.

Live Love. Breathe Love. Exist in Love. Remain in Love Always

In Search of Life…

Man’s Eternal Betrayals

ONE

Centuries ago, Peter was having his supper with Jesus. Peter told Jesus, “Jesus, I love you more than words can say. I Love You and without you, I cannot exist. I cannot even imagine a life away from you. I will give anything for this proximity. Nothing else matters to me, except your companionship.” Jesus looked into Peter’s eyes, smiled and said: ” Not so fast, Peter. Before the cock crows tomorrow morning, you would have disowned me thrice (Three Times).” Peter went into contemplation mode at these words of Jesus and, even though he lost his appetite, they continued their supper. Shortly afterwards, Jesus was arrested and, caring for their own dear lives, His disciples disappeared and dissolved into the crowd of sundry faces, beyond recognition. All were confused. What next? Will we be caught too? Will we be persecuted? Where to go? What to do? Is there a life ahead at all?

The wandering Peter also suffered seeming recognition from others, three times. “Is this the man whom we saw with Jesus?” Spontaneous response came from Peter, three times “Are you mad??? What are you talking about? I do not know any Jesus!!! There you go. All the steely resolutions that filled his heart a few hours ago, had completely disappeared.

Jesus has been arrested. They will kill him. Such a pure man!! How can one man singularly defend him? Now, the main job is to save oneself from persecution. Save YOURSELF… instead of save your SELF. When mind was the driving force and fear was the driver of the mind, preserving the body through which mind needs to operate was more important than living the truth that he proclaimed a short while ago. This is human nature. The confused Peter asked himself:  “Judas betrayed Jesus for some transitory money which he could not eventually use. What did I do? If I truly loved Him, I should have accompanied Jesus to the CROSS!!! Why did mortal fears stop me? Was my love so shallow? Then, what is the meaning of what I told Jesus during the last supper? Was that sheer pretension? No. I loved Jesus. But fear of torture, humiliation and death obscured my love.” Peter cried…

How many times have we betrayed our dear ones? We cannot even count!!! This is the truth. This is the eternal truth of human existence.

Our love is limited and conditional. It is walled by expectations. We cannot accept anybody as they are. We can accept a person only as we want them to be. If they behave differently, we disown them. Natural expressions have no value. Pretentious expressions are often glorified. Thus, men resort to pretensions all their lives, to preserve their short lived glory. When the last time Peter disowned Jesus, he saw Jesus completely chained and dragged through the streets ahead of him. Pity welled in his eyes. Sorrows drowned his heart. What did Jesus do, to suffer this? He only lived a life of conviction and selflessness. He played with danger at will. When such emotions were overflowing through his eyes, Jesus looked at him knowingly and smiled. Jesus knew everything, but was never affected. His own safety had no value for Jesus. What is the big deal in preserving a perishable body? If days are wasted in procrastination, what is old age for? Instead, if every moment is lived purposefully and selflessly, even a shorter life is worth it. Jesus knew exactly what He was doing and He was obviously never affected. He also knew His gross and insensitive “handlers”. They had no idea what they are doing too. They thought that physical annihilation amounted to silencing the thoughts. They were wrong. Thoughts were already sown. They must sprout in the right climate. The thoughts of benevolence have always been occurring in the higher realms and only their physical manifestation appeared briefly in the terrestrial realm. His aim was equal to that of a neat road sign. Jesus had already done that. Now, the nature of exit is immaterial. He just detached Himself from His perishable body and allowed the body to be handled by gross, ignorant mass. Jesus exited as peacefully as He entered. Death is not the End. Death does not Exist, just as Birth.

TWO

Three centuries ago, existed a wandering monk. Baba Atmananda or Rastha Baba (Road Baba). He was always moving and “on the road”. Many people thought that Baba is a mad man. Because, he never cared about food or clothing. He was always wandering. He contradicted himself many times and confused people. He sometimes swept the roads in the mornings. If somebody gave him money, he bought food and distributed all to poor people, hungry children, old people and stray animals. He used to get so excited in doing this, that he would forget to consume any food for weeks. He never stayed in one locality for more than 3 days.

Many people found him to be a Siddha and wandered with him. He never took anybody with him in the form of his disciples. But, all those who dared to live with him, were taken care of by Baba. He never chose any disciples though. One day, Baba suddenly told his companions: “There will be heavy clouds and rains. There can be no shelter from elements. We will be scattered”. His companions became scared and confused. If rain and flood happens, where will they stay? Some slowly detached from Baba and left for safer zones. Some tried to make a shelter or arrange one in the neighborhood. But, the problem was, Baba never stayed at one place for long. So, all the plans that they made were of no use.  Some chose to be with him against all the odds, as they were confident that Baba will protect them.

This time in the story, they were staying in a temple town in South India and they were all sleeping in the temple complex, on the floor, on a simple cloth. They stayed there for three nights, and on the third night, there was a theft in the temple. The police caught the thief. They brought him to the temple to take evidences and while taking him back, they were keenly observing the bystanders to see if any of them were showing any familiarity, spontaneously, towards the thief. Or, if the thief was looking at anyone in particular. This could be a sign that he could be an associate of the thief. They were disappointed. None showed any recognition. When the thief came near Baba Atmananda, he looked at Baba. Baba lifted his hand, smiled and blessed him. Police caught Baba and took him to the police station. His disciples ran away. They did the same thing that Peter did to Jesus. They completely disowned their Guru. All of them ran away, to other cities even, to escape persecution. Atmananda stayed in prison for three nights and it never affected him. Finally, the police understood his innocence and released him. He blessed the policemen and the police station and started walking, as always. For many weeks, Baba wandered alone. It did not make any difference to him. Some disciples understood Baba’s prediction of Clouds and Rains. Some came back. Some went away for ever.

Human relationships are so conditional. There is no permanence. Today, we may feel inseparability and deep love and tomorrow utter hatred. Relationships are so fragile and they are built on expectations. When our expectations crash, so do our relationships. Life after life, we have been living this terrestrial truth of impermanence. When can we truly understand our existentialistic impermanence and  embrace the truth and permanence?

Many liberated Masters have created situations that tilted their disciples from their comfort zones. They often behaved in strange ways. Disciples who have expectations and set notions about their Guru become disillusioned and quit. This was the aim of the Guru too. Shaking the tree. Dry leaves should fall. Only those with firm faith need to survive. Faith is the key. Faith takes them to the highest, with the guidance of the Guru.

THREE

Nirupama was in her late 30’s. Unmarried and looking. Domestic difficulties did not permit her to marry and settle down. Yet, she was hopeful and continued her search for a groom. She was working for this British couple for more than six years and they quite liked Nirupama. She was honest and trustworthy.

One day, from nowhere, a gardener called Raja appeared in her neighborhood. He was in his late 20s. Handsome and strong. Nirupama watched him keenly for a few days and decided that she liked him a lot. She made friends with him. She found him to be a bit shy and reluctant in the beginning, but, later on, they fell “deeply” in love. What has age got to do with love?!!!

Their relationship matured rapidly and they spent all their free time together. For Nirupama, it was like a fresh rain on her parched life. A big relief. Raja was reasonably educated and intelligent. Nirupama was happy about it. She dreamed of having a house and children of her own with Raja. Raja also encouraged her dreams. Thus, months went by. Her dreams grew into determination. Raja supported it. They even behaved like a husband and wife. Raja put in her mind the need for capital to start a family. All these years, she has been spending for her own family, educating her brothers and sisters and treating her ailing parents. She had no savings of her own. Raja made her understand the importance of savings of their own and even showed her how much he has saved ever since he met her, for their dreams’ sake. She was convinced and she also started to save money. She even started to collect materials for their eventual house.

A year or so passed and they decided to eventually tie the knot. Nirupama realized that she did not know any family members of Raja, nor was she clear of where he belonged to. He just told her that he is an orphan, hailing from the neighboring state. Love is blind. She did not care about such details anyway. Her love was powerful enough to eradicate any worries about his nativity. They decided to get married on a particular day. The week before that day, they sat and charted out their future plans. The first thing was to go to his state, get married at a magistrate office, take a rented house and start the family. They would both leave their current jobs. He would find a job in their neighborhood and she would assist him, as best as she could. Their priority was children and everything else was secondary. Nirupama was excited. She announced her plan to her employers and they supported her wholeheartedly. They gave her some money and new clothes. Raja persuaded her to get more money. She was not happy to ask for more. He convinced her that the amount they both had in hand was insufficient even to rent a house. For the first time in her life, she stole money. Nirupama’s employers trusted her so much that they always left their rooms unlocked. Even though guilt haunted her, looking forward for a great life, she ran away to the state of Raja. She also realized that Raja also had stolen some money from his employer, “for their sake”. So, they shared their guilt. They traveled in a local bus. Raja hugged Nirupama and made her feel comfortable and loved.

Next day morning, their bus arrived at the bus station in Raja’s home town. Raja said: “There is still time for the government offices to open. We could use the public facilities to freshen up. You could go to the bath and toilet, freshen up and comeback. I will wait till you come back and then I will do the same. Then we will have breakfast and go to the office of the marriage registrar.” Nirupama was excited about the day and taking her clothes for changing after bath, she left her bags with Raja and went to the toilet. When she came back, she could not find her bags or Raja. She searched the entire place. He was nowhere to be seen. Thinking that he might have gone to toilet, she remained at the same place she left him till noon time. He never came back. Slowly she realized that she has been BETRAYED!!!

Raja left with their bags and money. He went to a friend who is a money lender. He had told Raja that if he brings some money to him, in a month’s time, he can double that amount and return to him. Raja handed over the entire cash to his friend. Friend treated him with a lunch and accepted the money. He asked Raja to come back exactly on the same day, the next month.

When Raja went back to his friend exactly on the same day, the next month, his friend pretended that he does not remember any transactions between him and Raja. He asked for proof in writing, receipt of some kind. Raja had none. Raja lost his money. He knew that his friend has CHEATED him.

His friend used the money to buy a new car. He went to the second hand car dealer and bought a fancy car for an “unbelievable bargain”. He was given a week to decide and since he knew the dealer, he took the car for test drive. His friend allowed to keep the car for a week. The next day, police arrested him and the car because the car was stolen. He had to spend a lot of money to get out of the situation and police case. The car dealer had CHEATED him.

Thus, the saga of cheating continues in the terrestrial life. Who gets the last laugh? The History. History laughs at the human folly. Terrestrial urges make people ruthless and they carry the guilt and burden. Nirupama cheated her employers. Raja cheated Nirupama. Money lender cheated Raja. The car dealer cheated the money lender. Everything comes around, sooner or later. In the search for life, we accumulate. We become over burdened by our own actions and their heaviness. We blame others for our suffering. We never realize that each thought, word and action of ours creates our own destiny. This is the truth. If we realize this, we will be unconditional. We will certainly watch our own thoughts, words and actions. We will never hurt anyone. We will always express love without expectations. Life is so short. Life is all about LOVE. Life becomes heavy with Greed. Life becomes light with spontaneous expressions of KINDNESS and LOVE. Life becomes unbearable with Anxieties and Hatred. Life becomes meaningful with Unconditional LOVE. In search of life, or its meaning, if we live indiscriminately, nobody else will be able to help us. We will suffer, over lifetimes. No action, word or thought will go wasted. Everything is bound to build a chapter in our existence, irrespective of whether the chapter is long or short.

This time I chose to talk about the shallowness of relationships because, this is the truth on earth. Nobody loves anybody unconditionally. Every relationship is conditional. Every attachment has a purpose. Love and kindness depend on conditions. This is the sorry state of our seemingly grand relationships. Small  and ignorable errors are separating people. People hesitate to even smile, let alone hug and kiss. We have lost spontaneity. It is time to think deeply about ourselves, our thoughts, words and action. Are they conditional or not? I bet, all of us will find tons of conditions attached to each relationship. The ropes of conditions are strangling ourselves. We are living in an idealistic world. We pretend and live our pretensions, eventually becoming oblivious about our reality and truths. It is time. Wake UP. It is time. It is TIME…

LOVE YOU ALWAYS

M

The NEST – A True Story

God Created Space. Man Created The Nest

Brian belonged to a Middle Class family. This also means that he inherited much more “DO’s” and “DON’T’s” from his family and the society than his rich and poor friends. Richness, or higher purchasing power, and poverty, or no purchasing power, have one thing in common –  FREEDOM. The middle class does not have this luxury, so they cover themselves with a cloth of convenience called morality. When walls of the society prevent their mobility, they hide behind the veil of morality. This is the truth of the middle class life.

Brian was a rather shy and introverted boy, who avoided all kinds of confrontations, but strongly objected to various forms of injustice that he encountered each day, in his daily life. He was also sensitive and carried many complexes up his sleeve. This often prevented him from shining bright or utilizing each opportunity to excel in his class.

Brian, with his parents and younger sister, lived in the suburbs of Mumbai. After his 12th class, he started travelling to the city central for further education. There he met Miranda, an intelligent girl with a no-nonsense attitude. She seemed to know what she wanted and how to get it. Initially, it was admiration that Brian felt, which later became obsession. Miranda’s absence made him depressed and low. Even though he was not sure if she ever noticed him or noticed him enough, he was happy to be around her. He was also impressed by the way she could see through her wooers and put them in their place. High level of maturity for a girl in her teens!!! She had the poise and style and, in a way, most boys were afraid of her. They left her alone, to a great extent. This increased Brian’s admiration towards her. He greatly admired elegance.

Elections brought them together. Elections gave them the proximity and time to develop an affair. Without their knowledge, they fell in love. Even though it happened by itself, for Brian, it was a dream come true. They became closer and closer. They eventually became inseparable.

Mind is the seat of emotions. Mind started the process of owning each other, more so with Brian. Even if he sees Miranda having a coffee with her male friends, let alone crack a joke and laugh aloud, he started becoming jealous. Slowly, difference in opinions started and it matured into heated arguments. There was no spate for jealousy. Mind gave various dimensions to Brian’s imagination. He had no idea how he could protect Miranda from other boys. Even though it was quite a tedious and time-consuming matter to take such detours, Brian picked up Miranda everyday from her house and dropped her back after the classes. Miranda was not too happy about Brian’s over-possessiveness. But, since she appreciated his honesty, sincerity and good heart, she swallowed his sundry objections without much resistance.

Jealousy Brings out the Devil in Men

Miranda was quite pretty and intelligent. She was the topper of her class. She always shone bright in all competitions and was also kind and considerate to others. Attitude of charity was inherent in her. She used to help the poor and needy when ever she could, and that too spontaneously, without waiting for others’ support. She would easily pick up the wounded dog in the street and take it home and nurse it back to health. She would feed birds everyday. She always carried some food with her for poor old lying neglected in the busy streets of Mumbai. Brian also loved this aspect of Miranda and he used to volunteer his support all the time. This was one aspect which kept Brian close to Miranda.

Greed has no respite. TRUE Happiness is in GIVING...

Time flew, classes ended, both Brian and Miranda got employed in good institutions and they decided to get married. It was a small and tidy function. Their relatives and a few friends participated. After marriage, they moved from their parents’ house into a rented apartment, which they later bought on hire purchase. A new life began. Miranda beautified their home within their resources and called it  “The NEST”.  Their marriage produced three children, within six years. After a boy and a girl, the youngest was Anna. A pretty and cute child. Miranda managed her family life and career efficiently. Brian was often amazed at her energy, as he used to be so tired by the time he returned back from his office. Miranda would still do cooking, taking care of children and Brian, and even prepare food for the next day, without any complaints. She hardly scolded her children or expressed discontentment about anything. Even when the children fell ill, she took them to hospital, brought them medicines, administered the medicines on time, yet, managed her office work and domestic chores. There was a part-time, old housemaid to help her. Even the finance management was her responsibility. Brian often felt like a demanding tourist in his own house, as his responsibility was quite limited to his office and his own affairs. He willingly allowed Miranda to run the house, i.e. the lethargic  nature of Brian automatically shifted all the regular responsibilities of the family to Miranda. Life continued thus.

Each Moment is a Gift to be Cherished. Love is the true energy of life.

Despite having limited responsibilities, Brian always complained, shouted and abused Miranda and their children. He continued to be jealous and suspicious about Miranda and her interaction with her colleagues and clients. He even spied on her when his suspicion got the better of him. Fortunately, Miranda was ignorant about the growing intensity of his suspicion and the pace with which this cancer of jealousy was spreading in Brian.

Brian was having sleepless nights. He also started resorting to alcohol to cool his suspicious mind. He wandered into unholy company of gamblers and alcoholics. Miranda was helpless. Her advice always ended up in bitter fights and, for the sake of children, she kept quiet. Brian’s lifestyle started affecting his work and he was warned for negligence, many times, until one day he finally got sacked. He even lost initiative to hunt for another job. He started sitting at home and it affected his morale. Miranda tried her best and got him another job. The new company of Brian’s was a client of Miranda’s company and she knew the boss very well. Brian swallowed his pride and joined the company, more because of his wounded ego for being a parasite of his own wife. But, he also suspected a relationship between his wife and his new boss. This started eating on his mind. He picked up silly fights with Miranda, which the matured Miranda ignored. She had many other important things to remember and perform concerning her family and her children. Children grew up well and excelled in their education. This gave inspiration and hope to Miranda, she was proud of them.

Jealousy is a serious cancer which destroys oneself and others too...

Arguments lead to severe conflicts, and even reached a point of divorce. They stopped speaking to each other and started communicating through the children. Children also became gloomy and silent. The Nest became a deserted ghost house when both Brian and Miranda were at home together. This continued until one day Anna fell sick and had to be admitted in the hospital. By the time the doctors diagnosed blood cancer, it was too late to save the child. Anna died in the hospital. Miranda loved Anna a lot and Brian also loved her in his own way. Her loss brought them together, at least temporarily. They forgot their differences and shared their grief. After a few months, Brian drifted back to his old ways. The NEST, once again, became a war zone.

One evening, due to heavy rains in Mumbai, Miranda called Brian to pick her up from her office, which was close to hers. He picked her up and while driving home, they had an argument over some silly reason. While they were shouting at each other, through the mist obscured window, Brian failed to see a parked trailer without any lights and rammed his car into it. Brian survived the accident, with broken bones while Miranda left her body, on the spot, at the age of 42 years and three months.

Brian spent three months in the hospital while the children were looked after by his mother (his father had passed away a few years before). Without Miranda, life became impossible for Brian. He had no clue how to move on. He started realizing the value and worth that Miranda added to his life. When he returned back home from hospital, he realized that he should quickly get back to work or else he won’t be able to run his family. It was taxing for him to manage everything with his salary. Also, he did not know what were the priorities at home and in his own life. He even thought that his children were too demanding. He started drinking alcohol again. His mother could not stand his indifference and took the children to her house. He became alone in his own house.

Every moment reminded him of Miranda. He started feeling that her ghost is haunting him. He developed many fears including the fear of darkness and death. He started feeling that he will go mad. Regret stabbed him each moment. All these years that they lived together, he had done nothing for Miranda. He had never expressed love, kindness or compassion towards her. He never bought for her even one piece of jewelery or a good dress, except in the initial days of togetherness. He was only expecting more and more from her and criticizing her for everything. He never even hugged her, kissed or made love to her since their last child was born. He never appreciated her. He was only possessive and jealous about her. He could not even buy any gifts or toys for his children, apart from their regular books and necessities.

When loneliness and guilt became overbearing, he left “The Nest” and went to a monastery.  He fell at the feet of the chief saint of the monastery and requested  for peace and solace. The saint said: “Just be silent.” When ever he asked a question, the answer was “just be silent.” Initially, it irked him. Later on, he accepted it. Days went by, his questions started vanishing. After 10 days, there were no more questions. Only silence. At that point, the only answer possible was “silence”. All ghosts vanished from him and he started seeing the naked truth.

Without anyone telling him anything, through silence, he saw his own life as if he was watching a movie. A beautiful life, completely uprooted and destroyed by his own mind and its expressions. Nobody else was wrong here, except his own mind. Mind created all the agonies. Mind created doubts. Mind created suspicion, jealousy. Mind created ghosts. Mind created everything. They were all so far from reality and it abruptly took away the life of a beautiful person, to say the least about the agony of others. It denied peace at home. With each new thought, each new revelation, Brian started crying more and more. He sat and cried for almost two days, without food or sleep. Nobody disturbed him. Nobody bothered him in the monastery. For once, he was thankful. He experienced the expansion happening in his own heart when gratefulness blossomed there. He liked that feeling.

Mind Spoils Moments. Mind Creates and Destroys Happiness. Mind creates the veils of dissatisfaction. Watch your mind...

He saw the whole fabric of his own life. He saw the moments at which he missed to express love, express care, express compassion, kindness, beauty, energy, even to hug and feel the warmth and heartbeat of his own wife and children;  just because of the overpowering devils called Jealousy and Suspicion that ruled his mind. These devils were constantly destroying his each moment. They prevented him from enjoying any moment and also destroyed the bliss of his home. He realized “We must cherish each moment with love and gratitude. Moments never return back. We are growing old each day. Children become adults. We grow old. Childhood is lost, youth is lost, death comes closer. We cannot go back and love our children when they were young. We cannot go back to the past. We cannot rewind and replay. We cannot go back and love our husband or wife. If a moment is lost, it is lost for ever. We can handle our life either with love or with restlessness. When we handle our life with love, it gives us peace and contentment. When we handle all our relationships with love, it all gives us fulfillment. When restlessness is our expression, destruction is the result. Even if others treat us with contempt or hatred, if our heart is filled with love, our heart will be full. Nothing will affect us. Trust and Faith are essential in all relationships. Every moment of existence should be approached with love and gratitude. We own nobody. Nobody owns us. We are born alone and will die alone. BEWARE – Death is always around the corner. Live each moment, Love each moment. Never hurt anyone through thoughts, words or action. NON VIOLENCE in its perfection.” Brian got up and walked up and down, digesting his revelation.

When this revelation settled in him deeply, he was a changed man. He went to the Chief of the Monastery. He bowed to the saint and said “Thank You for the message. Through silence, you gave me the most valuable message of my life. I will use the rest of my life to express what I could not express in my whole life. Thank You.” The saint said: “In the stillness of your own mind, like the still water, you saw your own reflection. Your answer lies within your question. Nothing lies outside of you. The key to unlock the answer is silence, stillness. You have found the key. Now, go and live in peace.”

Brian went to his mother’s house, hugged his mother and children and cried. He went back to the city, took another rented house, found a job and brought his children and mother to the new house. His life changed for good, but Miranda was not alive to see this change. He regretted deeply. He placed the pictures of Miranda and Anna in the altar, along with the pictures of the saints and deities that he worshiped. He kept a lamp burning in his altar all the time. He did his best to take care of his mother and children. He never married again. He lived the rest of his life like a saint, spreading the wisdom that he “owned”, the hard way.

We are Unique Beings in the Garden of God. Express abundance of Love.

This story may sound too ordinary compared to the previous posts. I have a reason to put it here. The need of the moment is LOVE. The world needs it all the more. In-sensitiveness is destroying our lives and our mother earth. Lives are getting torn apart because of restlessness, ego, hatred, jealousy, anger and such baser emotions. What is the benefit of “being spiritual” and practicing many paths to liberation according to one’s personal liking, if we cannot express love and compassion? If our inner space is full of calamities, nothing can take you forward in spirituality; all practices will only amount to escapism. True liberation is in our capacity to express love unconditionally, at all times. Without having kindness, compassion, love, and all such higher qualities, over flowing from the heart, there can be no liberation. God does not need your money nor your reverence. God is within you, not outside of you. If you cannot see God in all beings and learn to respect that God, what is your worship for? God is not sitting in temples, mosques or Churches. God lives in human hearts. If we cannot see the God within us and in the hearts of others, no amount of worship will get us salvation. Noting will take us to liberation. Meditation, satsangs, yoga or praanayams are all absolutely useless, unless its core essence, which is unconditional love, cannot be expressed whole heartedly. Otherwise, this life is wasted.

If we cannot see God in everyone, How can we SEE GOD at all???

Almost the whole of our life, most of us live in the cage of our own conditioning. This state refuses us any happiness. We fail to see the beauty and inherent happiness of our current moment and hope for happiness in the future. We lose the precious moment called NOW. When mind is set on future or past, we do not enjoy our present. Thus when we miss all opportunities, regrets eat our conscience. How many quarrels!!! How many fights!!! How many disappointments!!! Because of our conditioning and mental blocks, how many people have we alienated from ourselves!!! Because of our limitedness, how much of love did we discard, block, burn!!! Have we ever thought how many people became sad because of our thoughts, words and action? What did we gain from this? Are we better off because others are unhappy? Dissatisfaction is the nature of our mind. Allow it to be dissatisfied. Yet, appreciate the current moment without resistance. The more we resist, the more we suffer. The more we accept, the more we will be peaceful. There cannot be a bright future for the one who lives based on emotions which are always temporary. Negative emotions unleashed through its uncontrollable expressions will only bring forth regrets, guilt, shame and sadness in the future. Emotional outbursts are like bullets – once fired, they cannot be re-called. They must kill. The more stronger the cage of your conditioning is, liberation becomes all the more impossible, unless a real shake up happens in life, such as the death of a dear one, to make your eyes open. Postponing any expression is foolishness. What if tomorrow never happens!!! If you cannot express love today, how can we be sure that there will be a tomorrow to express it? The same is with gratitude, compassion and kindness. Everything should be spontaneous. Everything should be from the heart. Your heart should be spontaneous with these expressions. Life will give you wonderful moments. Otherwise, sorrow after sorrow will haunt you. Regrets will destroy you. Guilt will imprison you. There is no tomorrow. Do it NOW. ACT NOW.

In the midst of God's Abundance, We chose poverty.Poverty of the heart...

Jealousy The Eternal Disease that KILLS...

Straight Talk

Mohanji – Straight Talk

Q: I cannot meditate. What should I do?

A: Do not meditate. Never force anything on yourself. You will start hating it sooner or later.

To start with, be aware of your breathing. Breathe consciously. Eat consciously. Drink consciously. Do everything consciously. It will give you the same or even better effect than meditations.

Q: Guru

A: Guru is a tattwa – a principle. Guru is not a man or a woman. Guru Tattwa flows through time. Terrestrial communication needs tangibility, a body. So, Guru happens in human form too, so that people can identify and understand. Everybody is a Guru to somebody. The eternal principle of Guru flows through everybody. Everybody has atleast one Guru. Every Guru had a Guru, the one who helped to destroy the darkness and ignorance of the limited conscious mind. Soul itself is a Guru. The true Guru, personal Guru of every being is its Soul. Guru could be an object, a message or a thought. Since Guru is a principle it could also be a telepathic communication or a communion. Guru appears when the disciple is eligible. Guru happens when the disciple is ready for that knowledge. When questions arise in mind, sooner or later, the answers appear. When questions block our natural evolution, information or advice happens through some one. Guru principle is beyond body. The supreme Guru is Parabrahma, the eternal father or Allah. Starting from Him, there are many many mouths that convey the eternal principles of existence or the laws of the universe. The Guru principle will eternally flow. Inorder to accept and accent the Guru principle, all we need are ego-less-ness and surrender. No judgement – Just an open mind. Thats enough. Guru tattwa will flow through us, washing away all our mental confusions and will always guide us. The moment we feel we know a lot or even worse, we know everything, the principle that is Guru can deliver nothing to us. So, the childlike wonder in us will work wonders for us, as the eternal Guru principle will take us to the highest possible, in one life time. Guru principle is based on unconditional love. It is based on zero expectations and complete benevolence. Pranaams to The Great Guru principle that eternally flows like Ganga.

Q: I have been observing …………. I do not think she is progressing. After spending so much time for God, why is she not progressing spiritually?

A: First of all, do not judge another person’s spiritual progress. You do not have the authority to do that. Nobody has authority to judge another person because they cannot see his/her karma which makes them progress or get blocked. Secondly, what do you mean by spending time with God? Is God an external entity? What is your concept about God? Does God experience loneliness – he asks someone to give him/her company? Understand that God is omnipresent. God is beyond all forms and is all forms. There is no separate God away from us. All are God. All are aspects of God. I believe what you meant by the expression “spending so much time with God” was ritualistic worship or chanting . It is true that rituals hardly produce evolution. It easily becomes another habit, without which we feel incomplete. So, in that context, I am not surprised that she is not evolving. But, I still would like to appeal to you to avoid judging another person as well as yourself. You do not know your karmic agenda as well. Remember that. Also, no comparison is possible in spirituality. Everyone is walking his/her own path to the same destination. Lastly, God does not need your time. God needs nothing. We need God. God has no insecurities in your absence or indifference. We have that issue. Let us not compare God’s consciousness with our waking state. So, everything is for ourselves. Nothing is for God. Understand this clearly. God Bless You.

Q: I see her touching the feet of every possible Guru. Will it take her anywhere?

A: I have no interest in commenting on such matters. Isn’t it individual’s discretion? Who are we to decide what is right or what is wrong? It depends on various factors. Still, I am answering this question in a different way, only because I thought it is very important to clarify certain matters in general terms. Getting the grace of all Masters is good, especially of those who are enlightened. Wandering unconsciously, not knowing what we are seeking is an absolute waste of time. This is the difference. Masters exist in a different level of consciousness than the seekers. Most people go to them seeking something tangible. This is the tragedy. Hardly a few people actually go to a Master seeking salvation – mukthi or moksha. I have seen many wanderers. They are so insecure, they cannot anchor anywhere. They are so feeble that they shift their loyalty at the fall of a hat. They have heavy expectations and, if they do not get exactly what they expect, they not only leave the Guru, but also scandalize him. Stability and consistency is essential for spiritual growth. One who keeps wandering camp to camp will never gather grace. But, having no divisions within and accepting all as Divine incarnations and being one with all the Masters is a great thing. There is no comparison there. There is only love. Unconditional love.  Love without expectations. Such people evolve a lot in one life.

It Is In Our Nature To Love Unconditionaly, Beyond All Barriers

Q: I cannot concentrate.

A: Do not concentrate. Be aware of this aspect of yourself and accept yourself with this aspect wholeheartedly. Never resist. Just be aware of your own breath pattern and then heart beat. You will surprise yourself.

Q: I am confused

A: Good. You are perfectly living the duality of existence. When you know that you are confused, when you are aware of your confused state, your diagnosis is complete. The remedy lies in the state itself. Clarity. In order to understand what is clarity, there should be confusion. Sound is essential to know silence. Silence is essential to know sound. One compliments the other. So, be relaxed. When the clouds of your mind leaves, sun will shine bright.

Q: Life and Death

A: Life and Death are not contradictory, but, they are complimentary. Life takes one to death and death takes one to life. It keeps happening. Time and space changes, destiny and destination changes. But, they are essentially complementary. We need to have life to know death and death to know life. One cannot exist without the other. Both are two sides of the same coin called terrestrial existence.

Q: Hunger

A: This body has consumed kilos of food and liters of water. Still it craves for more. How can we appease this craving? By going beyond the mind. By connecting to our eternal soul that has no needs or cravings. When we shed our dependency on food and water, we proceed in our path of liberation. Hunger is more of an emotion than a necessity in today;s world. We have wasted large quantities of food, with great indifference. Fine food adds to ego. Presentation of food – ego. Dinners – ego. We live a complex life. Where is the escape? Simplicity and Purity. Hunger will never control you. You will control hunger.

Q: What is bad?

A: Bad is an aspect of terrestrial duality. The other side of the coin of which one side is called “good”.

Q: How do we know that we are awake?

A: In spiritual terms? Simple. When we become aware that we do not exist. When no gross exists and we cannot experience duality anymore. Then we will know that we are awake.

Q: If a person constantly lives with dreams of the future, what happens to his present?

A: There is no present for him. He only lives in the future. Since he is not handling his present, his future will become chaotic. Those who always dwell in the future are usually escapists. They are lazy and tamasic. They kill their future by ignoring their present.

Q: What do you think about competition?

A: I only look at it as an aspect of duality – maya. If we compete in life, we are fools. Doing our very best is all what we can do and should do. If we compete with another karmic being, we are absolutely silly.

Maya…

Q: What about sex?

A: A good question. Without that you would not have been here to ask this question. What I do not understand is – why people give over emphasis to sex? According to me, its importance is similar to eating or sleeping. It is just another necessity to keep the species alive. I feel that our near impotent society made sex into a taboo or a big deal. We are blindly following that notion. Why can’t we just let sex be, just like our breath, heartbeat, hunger or any kind of strong emotion? What a shame if we give it over emphasis and brood over it!!!

Q: Can you give me a simple advice?

A: LOVE ALL … SERVE ALL I am borrowing these words from the Great Master Bhagawan Sai Baba. Also remember this every moment – WE REAP ONLY WHAT WE SOW…IN MANY FOLDS.

Good Deeds Are Always Rewarded With ABUNDANCE of Blessings

Q: Do you think I am selfish?

A: Yes. All are selfish. All embodied beings are selfish. There are very few enlightened ones. Look at yourself, observe yourself and your thoughts. You will know what I mean.

Q: Why can’t they understand me?

A: There is huge variety in levels of consciousness. Each one is in his own sphere, in that context. Those who bother us are those who cannot reach or understand our level of consciousness. Forgive them and love them. Soon enough, they will see what we see. It can also be the other way – we may not have the capacity to see their realm of existence. Then, we tend to disagree with them. We fail to understand them. Nobody is perfect. We are all walking the same wide earth seeking varied experiences. We all are trying to understand this existence, using our faculties, through the senses and mind. We are all enveloped in different levels of consciousness.

Q: When did you became aware that you are capable of imparting power or divine energy?

A: Never. I never existed in the first place. I still do not exist.

Q: How do you manage so many things everyday?

A: I do not manage anything. Everything happens through me. Why do we develop this ego aspect that we are managing matters? Are we managing our respiration? Circulation? Digestion? Conversion of food to energy and waste? Heartbeat? Secretions? When we are not controlling all these vital functions that are essential to keep our body in working condition, what are we controlling outside? The feeling that we control things is utter delusion. Just be far away from it. Be clear about that.

God Bless All.

Love
