Jai Maa (Hail to the Divine Mother). Wish you a happy Datta Jayanti (birthday of Lord Dattatreya). It is auspicious to be here doing the pooja (Mohanji did the Guru paduka pooja earlier).
Guruji has asked me to speak about Datta consciousness. In one word, I can say that it is you. It is your consciousness. Lord Datta is the Trinity in one – three in one – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. That means “Tat Twam Asi” – You are That. When you are realize that awareness that we are one – one consciousness with everything around us.
As we evolve with our human bodies, when we stop seeing differences at a certain stage, it means we have become a “human human”. When I say a “human human”, I refer to somebody who can only express compassion, kindness, selflessness, unconditional love, sharing and caring – beyond ownership, every possessiveness, every positions. That is one level of stabilization of consciousness. Only then do we actually become human beings. If we have many desires, we are still between the animal and human stages because we are still insecure.
The second stage is when you stabilize in “human human”, you then achieve the state of sainthood – “saint human”. When you say “saint human”, you are established in a state where you know that you don’t belong to anybody and nothing belongs to you. You know that you are not here to own anything from earth. You cannot own anything from earth. You can only have experiences with your relationships, positions, materials and possessions. That stabilization is called a “saint human” state.
From there, you can transcend to a “god human” state – a state where you clearly understand, recognize and experience that you are one with everything. There is nothing beyond you. You cannot see differences around you. You see only you in every atom, tree, bird, animal, person – you see only you. At that stage, you are one with the Datta consciousness. That means you are not bound by the human body (or incarnation). You are immortal. At that stage, incarnation cannot disturb you.
Incarnation also has attachments. You start believing you are this incarnation. You start believing that you are this position. Even gender, possessions, materials and relationships. Everything is your burden. At this stage, all these burdens go. You clearly understand that “I own nothing”. I can only have certain experiences from the things around me, and also some memories connected to it. When you are clear that you cannot own anything, even a memory has no value. When memory has no value, thoughts have no value. These are samadhi states. You reach levels of samadhi where thoughts cannot ruffle your mind. The mind itself loses importance. Mind itself starts collapsing. You reach a level of samadhi where mind collapses. When mind collapses, you only have consciousness. You are one with consciousness. Consciousness has three aspects – jagrut (waking), svapna (dream) and sushupti (deep sleep). That also becomes one because you cannot have three aspects. It has to be one.
From here, you transcend further. These are all samadhi states which all of us will attain at some point. Nobody can escape it. Today it may not be your reality but tomorrow it will. So it’s not that you have to lose something to reach here. You just be. To be Datta, you have to just be. Being you 100% – in one word it is called acceptance. Total acceptance of yourself. You cannot compare and you cannot change yourself. You are already this incarnation which you cannot change. Just like you cannot change the model of car once you purchase it. You change the interiors of the car to some extent but you cannot change the model itself. Similarly, you cannot change and you don’t have to change yourself. This is a clear understanding of Datta consciousness. Datta consciousness is you – being absolutely you.
And once you are clear about that, there is a very deep silence that settles in. Very deep silence – meaning nothing external disturbs you, nothing internal disturbs you. Your samsakaras, memories, impressions of things of the past, all the things which you might have collected in your existence in this life or past lives, stops disturbing you completely. Nothing disturbs you. You are in a perpetual state of silence and it has nothing to do with what you do in life. You can be a doctor, engineer, scientist, civil servant – whatever you do will have no value. It will just be an activity that you do for a living. It will be part of your appointed duty.
Apart from that, you are completely free all the time. You are witnessing and watching yourself. You perform but will have nothing to do with your performance. Your action and the result of that action is not a disturbance. No activity which is owned by you. No ownership – no disturbance. You are free. Acceptance leads to freedom. Freedom stabilizes to liberation. Liberation means nothing outside disturbs you, nothing inside disturbs you. There are no desires. Because desires are connected to mind. Mind itself is not there. Nothing is bothering you, no disturbance, absolute stillness. That is Datta consciousness.
